CHAPTER SIX
THE next few days were difficult but by the time Hunter was due to return on Friday Angelina felt that overall they had passed relatively smoothly. Time dragged at the hospital but she was there at ten oâclock every morning and didnât leave until after dusk, playing board games with Toby, reading to him when he was too tired to concentrate himself and generally just trying to make his days less uncomfortable. Craig Hammond popped in for an hour or so after school every day and she found herself looking forward to his visits. She could relax in his company, even dozing off once or twice while he was entertaining Toby if the day had been strenuous, and the uncomplicated warmth of his friendship was wonderfully soothing on her shattered nerves.
The three of them were laughing at a TV programme on Friday evening, Craigâs long body perched precariously at the end of Tobyâs bed close to her big easy-chair, when a sharp knock at the door followed by the immediate entry of a grim Hunter cut the laughter dead.
âGood evening.â He nodded dismissively at Craig, the grey eyes narrowed and cold, and as his gaze moved to Angelina they iced over still more before he turned to Toby, who was sitting up in the bed looking eagerly at his hero. âAnd how are you, young man?â he asked quietly, a warmth in his face that had been totally absent with the adults.
âGreat.â Toby grinned back. âAngel says Iâm going to move to your hospital soon, Mr Ryan.â
âI think in view of the fact that we are going to be seeing a great deal of each other over the next few weeks it might be as well to drop the âMr Ryanâ, donât you?â Hunter smiled into the too pale young face as his professional gaze noted the pallor. âHunter will do fine. And weâre going to transfer you this weekend, if your sister is happy with that?â He turned to Angelina again, dark brows raised enquiringly.
âYes, of course, anything you say.â She saw the sardonic gleam in the grey eyes at her obedient reply but didnât rise to the bait, forcing a cool smile on her lips as she held his gaze. âYouâre the doctor.â
âIndeed I am.â The grey eyes switched back to Toby. âAnd with that in mind I think that my patient has probably had enough excitement for one day. Iâd like to give Toby a quick examination, so perhaps if you wouldnât mind...?â He indicated the door with a lazy wave of his hand. âYouâre in your car, of course, Angel?â he asked smoothly.
âYes.â He would have seen it in the car park, she thought quietly; there had been no need to ask.
âThen Iâll meet you back at home.â It was a simple sentence and said with an air of innocent intimacy that was a clear message to the other man sitting watching them, but, rising as she was to collect her handbag and coat, Angelina
